The pathway molecules Wnt and Tcf are expressed in the top of the hydra, close to the mouth and tentacles, and the authors, led by Thomas Holstein, wrote that the hydra Wnt signaling pathway was involved in “local self-activation in the hydra head organizer.” Others had been likewise questioning what they thought they'd realized about hydra. Berking, who had labored in Chica’s lab at EMBL to isolate head and foot inhibition substances in hydra, wrote in Roux's Archives of Developmental Biology in 1983 that these proposed substances have been truly “an artefact” produced by the separation process. In reality, he wrote, substances may merely be present in Dowex 50 — a liquid utilized in chemistry analysis — that might also inhibit head regeneration. Berking added that “we have not been in a position to confirm that the extract from heads preferentially inhibits head regeneration and the extract from toes preferentially inhibits foot regeneration.” That left the door open for criticism, which started even earlier than the top activator substance was sequenced.

MacWilliams focused on foot growth in hydra, and the Gierer lab in 1972 had invited him to go to. When he returned as a postdoc fellow, he used a grafting technique1 to point out that foot and head activation acted on a gradient — which means that activation for a head was “confined to the presumptive head zone” and something related occurred in the foot region with foot progress. In February 1948 he grew to become chairman of the action committee of the Union of Czechoslovak Visible Artists. From 1948 he was Czechoslovakia's permanent delegate to UNESCO and in 1948–1950 he served as Czechoslovak ambassador in France. He was deputy head of the Czechoslovak delegation to the Third and Fourth Common Assembly of the United Nations in Ny City (1948, 1949) and a candidate for the UN Security Council. From 1945 till his expulsion in 1970 he was a member of the Communist Celebration of Czechoslovakia. In 1945–1948 he was the head of the VI Division of the Ministry of Info and Schooling, the place he was in command of foreign cultural relations.

He died of a heart assault on 24 July 1973 at his cottage in Říčky v Orlických horách. He participated as head of the delegation within the symposium of Czechoslovak and Soviet artists organized in Moscow on the initiative of the Soviet Union, visited Armenia, Azerbaijan, and in May and June visited the exhibition ready for the 1967 World Exhibition in Montreal. In the following series of pastels, his need to specific reality with easy synthetic symbols led him to the verge of abstraction (Landscape at the Lake, 1918). From 1920 onwards, social themes grew to become necessary to him, which demanded more dramatic expressionist technique of articulation (War, 1920). Adolf Hoffmeister was not only a lawyer and politician, but more importantly a cartoonist, illustrator, collage artist, author, poet, playwright, organizer of overseas exhibitions and artwork collector. If a few of his texts have solely the worth of genuine modern testament or historic documentary, most of what he drew or edited and pasted as collages retains the lasting validity of a living work of art. Philippe Soupault described Hoffmeister on the occasion of his 1961 exhibition in Paris as some of the well-known portraitists of our time. In 1973 he wrote a brief play, Pissoir, dedicated to Edward Albee (not revealed till 1990) and held a non-public exhibition of his last collages in his house in Pod Bruskou Avenue.
